Marshall County, with a population of 31,659 recorded in the 2020 census, is bounded by Kentucky Lake and Land Between the Lakes to the east, making outdoor activities a major attraction and generator of revenue. Marshall County is the home to Kentucky Dam, which opened in 1944 and formed Kentucky Lake from the Tennessee River. The dam provided a source of hydroelectric electricity to spark growth in the country and West Kentucky. Benton is the county seat of Marshall County and is the commercial and retail hub. Calvert City is the home of 16 industrial plants, drawn to the area by inexpensive electricity and convenient transportation. With a strong economic base and abundant resources, Marshall County provides a large park system and well-funded schools in addition to its outdoor attractions.
